January / February 2009

Picture
Greetings to Everyone,
Our prayers are lifted up for each of our friends as a new year begins.  Each new year, at least on the Gregorian calendar, brings with it all sorts of things, but not least among them is the opportunity to begin something new.  For this newsletter, it is a new photo of Joan and me.

The picture was taken at last month’s celebration of Chanukah, a very festive and joyous occasion.  Actually, pictures of the two of us are rare.  Generally, I prefer to be ‘behind the camera’ rather than being the subject of the photographer’s art.

Whatever the case, We greet you warmly and pray that Adonai Elohim will richly bless you during 2009 as you go about your daily vocation.  I also hope you will take the time to read on through this Newsletter and that you will be greatly encouraged by the news and other items we share with you.

WELCOME TO NEW FRIENDS AND GUEST READERS:
Over the last while, a number of people have contacted us and asked to be added to our mailing list.  They cite the opportunity to learn more about the Jewish Roots of our Christian Faith as being of real interest to them.  I want to welcome you “on board” and hope that you will find items of interest in the following pages and subsequent issues.

Whenever I receive a newsletter, or a mailing of this sort, I keep it somewhere handy to that place where I know I will be able to read it a little at a time.  The Lord knows, for instance, how many books I have read while waiting for Joan to get off work.  Great in the summer, but a tad cool in the winter.  I mention this because a few of our long time recipients noted the extra pages in our last edition.  This is due to the transformation of this communique from being simply an update and prayer-letter to being a means of teaching on at least one topic related to the Messianic observance of our faith journey, as well as continuing to let you know what is happening in the ministry and in our lives, and requesting your prayerful support for the challenges we are trying to meet.  Of course I realize that this would mean printing off a hard copy for yourself.  I will leave that decision to you.  At any rate, please know this, whether you’re a new reader, or a long time partner… Each and everyone of you is important to Joan and myself, and we value being able to call you “Friend”.

THIS MONTH’S TEACHING
Come back with me to a time just prior to the 1967 war in Israel.  The place is Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), the ancient city.  In fact, we are standing on a hillside, just outside the south-west wall of the old city, near an underground grotto in the vicinity of the ancient “Upper Room”.  By 2009, the entrances will be completely closed off, and this ‘last’ one sealed with heavy wire mesh, and a heavy door with a chain and lock, making it look more like a prison, than the baptismal area it is thought to have been some 2000 years ago.  Now, in 1967 however, it is open and has been discovered by an elderly Greek-Orthodox Monk.  His name is Tech Otecus.  He later reports that, as a result of his ‘foraging’, he has discovered some 40 artifacts, including shards of pottery, oil lamps and stone pieces.  Etched into each of the 1st century CE artifacts is a strange drawing, largely unknown, though it will subsequently be ratified by the curator of the Israel Museum as having been ‘seen before’, though he will decline from specifying in what circumstances or on what articles.

Tech Oticus takes some of those artifacts he finds to Ludwig Schneider, the then editor in chief of NAI’s magazine “Israel Update” (now known as “Israel Today”).  A few years later, together with Olim Creative Products of Tiberias, and Christian Floral Delivery of Colorado, News About Israel  (NAI) makes the press announcement about the find.  But we need to understand that the importance of this find does not lie in simply the articles themselves, but in the area in which they have been found and the symbol and writings etched into them.  The symbol, today copyrighted by NAI, is known as “The Messianic Seal”.

Picture
The Messianic Seal of the Church of Yerushalayim, pictured here, is a symbol for Messianic Judaism.  More recently, it is commonly used by Messianic Believers who come out of both a Jewish background as well as Christian (or for clarity “Former Gentile”) background.  It is not the only symbol of course. Others include simply the Menorah (perhaps the oldest of Jewish symbols), the Star of David, or some have opted for a representation of the Fish which encloses a stylized Menorah.

What do your see when you look at the seal?  Most people see three distinct symbols:  From the top, The Menorah, the Mogen David (Star of David) and the Fish.  In reality, however the symbol is made up of only two items – the menorah and the fish.  The Star is formed when the tail of the fish is entwined in the base of the Menorah.  This is an important point to consider as we examine what is being symbolized by the Seal.

“An Important Find”  Shortly after the discovery, Schneider took photographs of some of the artifacts which clearly showed the symbol to the curator of the Israel Museum.  He was assured by him that both the artifacts and the seal / engraving were “an important find” and that they were born out as authentic by other previous findings of similarly marked artifacts.

In a subsequent book entitled “The Messianic Seal of the Jerusalem Church” authors Raymond Robert (Bob) Fischer, of Olim Creative Products and Reuven Efraim Schmalz, local Israeli historian and artist, indicate that the “ancient three part symbol has, since 135 AD, been suppressed by various Israeli groups or agencies, such as the Israel Museum and Othodox rabbis in the Old City of Jersualem, while simultaneously being buried for these nearly two millenia by the church.”

Picture
I am always intrigued when I hear a comment like that, and I have to ask myself “Why?”  Why would both the Jewish leaders and the Christian Church keep such a thing secret?  I believe it is because it speaks volumes about the early believing community following the Resurrection of Yeshua ben Yosef, Ben Elohim.  To admit to such an important symbol would force the Jewish community to admit the presence of this early group, while the Church would have to concede obvious Jewish roots to the believing community.  For many, this would be iconoclastic.

Many of the items found by Tech Otechus have been verified as ceremonial pieces.  Some in particular would have been used in the immersion and anointing of new believers – what modern Christians call “baptism”, and the Messianic community refers to as Believer’s Immersion and for healing. (James 5:14-16). The picture on the right shows a small vial which would have held oil.  Another

piece, basically a block with a small indentation on top, is also etched with the symbol and displays the Aramaic phrase interpreted as “for the Oil of the Spirit”.  The vial pictured here, fits nicely into the indentation on top of the ‘brick’.

Breaking down the Symbol leads us to greater understanding of the word of God, and perhaps even the plan, and it is the basic concept behind the Messianic belief today.  First we have the Menorah:  this is the ancient seven-branched oil lamp or light stand found in the tabernacle of Moses and included in the “hardware” of the Temple of Solomon in Yerushalayim.  This distinctly Jewish symbol stands for the Torah, the first five books of the Tenach (Older Covenant) which “illuminates” mankind and indeed reveals the plan and intentions of a loving G-d for His people.  It is often readily seen as a symbol for the “Tree of Life”, one of the two trees found in Eden.  Knowing this, it is an easy step to see that the base of the Menorah represents the roots of the tree.  [As a point of interest, I would add that for innumerable reasons the term cross is offensive to the Jewish people, and when they refer to this ancient Roman instrument of torture and death, they prefer the term “Tree”.  An interesting parallel.]

Looking now at the Fish, we recall that this was another simple representation of the Messiah.  Remembering that the early community forged out into the Greek speaking areas of the Mediterrean, we are reminded that the Greek word for Fish is “Ichthus”  [Ich-Thoos], formed by the letters Iota, Chi, Theta, Upsilon and Nu.  These letters became an anacronym for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour” – thus the Messiah.  The fish also stands for Grace, as in the Grace of God.

In the middle of the symbol, as we have said above, one finds formed, the Mogen David.  This too, is an ancient symbol of Israel, a national symbol more than Biblical or Faith oriented.  It speaks of the Family of David, or more properly, it roots things in the Family of Jesse, the Father of David.  We know that the Messiah, Yeshua ben Yosef of Nazareth also comes from these same familial roots.  The Star quite simply indicates the “Commonwealth of Israel”, not just the political entity of today – that is the country itself, but something more – something indicated in Scripture.

Ephesians 2:11-22 reads: “Therefore, remember your former state: you Gentiles by birth – called the ‘uncircumcised’ by those who, merely because of an operation on their flesh, are called the ‘circumcised’ – at that time had no Messiah.  You were estranged from the national life of Isra’el.  You were foreigners to the covenants embodying God’s promise.  You were in this world without hope and without God.

“But now, you who were once far off, have been brought near through the shedding of the Messiah’s blood.  For He Himself is our shalom – He has made us both ONE and has broken down the M’chitzah [barrier / dividing wall] which divided us, by destroying in his own body the enmity occasioned by the Torah, with its commands set forth in the form of ordinances.  He did this in order to create, in union with himself, from the two groups: A SINGLE NEW HUMANITY  [“One New Man”: nasb] and thus make shalom, and in order to reconcile to G-d, both – in a single body – by being executed on a stake as a criminal and thus in Himself, killing that enmity.

“Also, when He came, He announced as Good News: ‘Shalom’ to you far off and ‘Shalom’ to those nearby, news that through Him, we both have access in one Spirit, to the Father.

“So then, you are no longer foreigners and strangers.  On the contrary, you are fellow-citizens with God’s people and members of God’s family.  You have been built on the foundation of the emissaries and the prophets, with the cornerstone being Yeshua the Messiah Himself.  In union with Him, the whole building is held together, and it is growing into a holy temple in union with the Lord,  Yes, in union with Him, you yourselves are being built together into a spiritual dwelling place for G-d.” [Strong’s Complete Jewish Bible]   For further clarification, I refer the reader to Romans 11:1-36 (with special attention to verses 17 & 18).

The Messianic Seal of the Church of Yerushalayim indicates the coming together of the Jewish Believer and the Former Gentile [Christian Believer] to form “One New Humanity” the Commonwealth of Israel, represented by the Star of David.  However, and this is a caveat to all – based on the Romans and Ephesians passages, this Commonwealth is NOT a replacement for the Jewish People.  Indeed, it encapsulates them, and indicates their role as the Root of the commonwealth itself.

As Bob Fischer has said when commenting on the monumental importance of this archaelogical discovery, “Beyond the historical background of the Nazarenes, the first Jewish believers who founded the Jerusalem Church, the Messianic Seal itself proclaims to the world, the pervasive Jewishness of Jesus Christ and the decidedly Jewish foundation and roots of the Church founded in His Name.  The Messianic Seal of the Jerusalem Church, strikes at the very roots of anti-Semitism while proclaiming a compelling message that restrores unity: Jew with Jew and Jew with [former] Gentile.  The importance of this discovery cannot be minimized.  The Messianic Seal is not only just the key to understanding the Dead Sea Scrolls, it can and should shake the foundations of the church and orthodox Judaism with its incredible message of unity and love.  It breaks down barriers that have existed for millenia and points the way toward restoration.”

From all of this, it seems that believers everywhere are being challenged today.  What does it mean to be a part of the One New Humanity of Sha’ul’s letter to the Ephesians?  What does it mean to be grafted into the vine mentioned in Romans 11, a vine which is obviously the Community of Jewish people?  Certainly we need to come to terms that the Gospel is presented primarily to the Jewish people.  As Sha’ul says: “to the Jew first and also to the Greek” [non Jew] (Romans 1:16)  At the very least, it seems clear to me that we are forever tied to Israel and the Jewish people.  It strikes me also that we have to at least consider what this new area – this One New Man implies.  And then of course, we have to live it out in our personal and corporate faith walk.  Where would that lead us, I wonder?   Hmmmm?

HAPPENINGS IN THE MINISTRY
Chanukah Celebration:  Our Chanukah celebration took on a new adventure this year, as we gathered with friends on the first night (December 21st) to light the first candle and sing a few songs.  Afterward we feasted on a light supper followed by some amazing homemade crepes with a variety of fillings.  It took Joan and I right back to our Barrie Bible Study days where I tasted my first crepes (flambe no less).  Following supper, we played the Dreidle game.  I honestly don’t remember who won, but I think someone was eating the “gold” coins before the game ended.

We didn’t get to light all the candles on the chanukiah because on Christmas Eve, after Joan got off work, we hopped into the car and drove north to visit Joel, Dawn, Ruthie and Caleb, and spend Christmas with them.  It was a great family celebration and on Boxing Day, the little ones had one last gift to open from Aunt Amy on the west coast.  In what is now tradition, I suppose, we phoned Amy and she stayed on-line while her multi-gift boxes were opened.  One of the paradoxes of Messianic faith is that (as far as we are concerned at Beth Roay Tov Ministries at least) we get to celebrate both the traditional Jewish AND Christian Feast Days.  At the same time, of course, we are fully aware that many of the Christian festivals - like Christmas - are days and dates randomly chosen and not Biblically sound.  After our return home, Joan and I continued to light the remaining lights for Chanukah.

In our Bible Study we continue to work our way through the weekly Parsha segments.  We have completed a number of very interesting themes including: “Ya’acov’s Ladder”; “Sarah and Rivkeh-a Comparative Study”; “Wrestling with Man and God” (the Story of Peniel); “The Abrahamic Covenant”; “One New Stick – lining up Ezekiel 37 with Ephesians 2” and a few more.  Upcoming studies include: “Understanding the New Moon and the Biblical Calendar”; “How Yeshua Perfectly Fulfills the Pesach”; as well as a number of studies into Biblical characters such as Deborah, Ruth, and more.  If you are interested in any of these studies, and you’re in the Concord area on a Thursday, why not join us.  Or, arrangements could be made to bring the study to your group for a special study evening.  Call me at 905 597 3485 for more information.

Arising out of the Bible Study we have been doing, I am realizing the need to create a Mission Statement for BRT ministries.  This is of course an on-going thing, based as much on elimination of what we don’t believe as recording what we do hold as truth.  It is a challenge which fills my “spare” (yeah right) time.

Recently (January 10th) I was welcomed officially as an Honourary Associate at Emmanuel Church, Richvale.  The announcement had gone out to the diocese through their “Link” website in late December.  After receiving prayer from The Rev’d Dr. Peter Robinson (incumbent), I was also touched by the warm reception of the congregation as they indicated their approval of the event.  In addition, I was privileged to celebrate the Eucharist with them that day.  Being an associate affords me a true and proper “home base” and connection with the wider church.  Of interest to me is that Emmanuel Church is in the York-Simcoe area, under Bishop George Elliott whom I succeeded a few years ago in the Parish of Minden-Kinmount.  It is hoped that now more doors will open in other congregations so that I can do some teaching there as well.

Once again, during Lent this year, Emmanuel will host a special Bible based course with a variety of “leaders” speaking about Bible Characters who have influenced their thinking and even their lives.  I have accepted the opportunity to be one of the leaders.  I have not, to date, decided on my choice of Biblical personnage, but I have narrowed it down to about 2 choices.  The Lenten course will run Sundays following church (about 12 noon till 1 pm) between March 1st  and 22nd.

I continue to work on my book “Off Target”, although progress is very slow.  I keep having to sideline the process in order to do other tasks.  I continue to ask for your prayers in this matter, that the Lord will provide the time that I need to put the many thoughts I have down on paper. (Does that phrase still apply in the computer age?)  In the last edition of the newsletter I reported a few of the chapter titles.  The purpose of the book is to help believers see that we need to return to the essentials of Yeshua’s teaching and His faith practices and to come to terms with how we have been taken “off target” through years of alterations and denial.  It is not an easy task.  Please pray also that I will continue within the leading of the Ruach HaChodesh (Holy Spirit) in this venture.

I am happy to announce that Joan recently celebrated her *____rd* birthday.  We had a great time and like so many in my own family, she continues to “draw it out” through the month.  Members of the Chavarah and the Bible Study helped Joan to mark the occasion with a special cake, and some gifts, making her day special.  Joan and I also went out to a favourite restaurant which we haven’t been to for some time and celbrated over a fine meal.

I can also report that there have been some big changes in Joan’s work situation.  The Richmond Hill store has been closed down until sometime in February while it goes through a major physical renovation.  It will be transformed into a new “BouClair Home” store.  This process began some time ago as they got out of dealing in fabrics and began the shift into home décor on a more concentrated level.  During the renovation, Joan is working in the Vaughan Store, Hwy 7 at Weston Road.  This is already a BouClair Home site, and so she is getting familiar with the products and the new concepts and equipment she will have to use.  Just before closing the doors in RH, the staff learned that their manager would not be returning after the renovations.  Life in the RH store was becoming very tense, so it is hoped that this will ease the burden a little bit for Joan and her fellow employees.

I have been spending the last few days updating the BRT web page.  Because my days are filled with a variety of activities, I can’t always get on to edit the site as much as I would like.  The other day a friend pointed out that it was a little out-dated, and that I should attend to it – so I have.  I also added a photo gallery (in addition to our photo album).  The latter has pictures with explanations, the former is just photographs of items of interest.  A number of other minor changes were made as well.  Records indicate that we get between 15 and 50 “hits” a day,  so when you get a chance, check it out again at www.bethroaytovministries.com   I should also report that I have purchased websites with similar names with the intent of linking them all to this central site.  This will help to avoid conflicts with other groups trying to ‘mimic’ the name of the ministry.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Besides the Lent courses at Emmanuel mentioned above, I want to remind everyone that Pesach is rapidly approaching.  I will be contacting churches / clergy about my availability to come and instruct (in at least 3 different levels) about Passover and the connections with the Christian faith.  This ancient festival, which commemorates the deliverance of the Hebrew people from bondage in Egypt, is one of the most vibrant means of seeing the hand of God at work in the lives of His faithful community.  Passover involves the first 3 of the annual Festivals – Pesach, Unleavened Bread and First Fruits.  But if you want to know more, you’ll have to call and make an appointment for me to come and speak to your ‘group’.  Passover happens between April 8th  and 16th .

Here’s a suggestion:
Why not speak to your pastor about sponsoring a “Jewish Roots” day in your congregation.  It could be during a morning service, or better yet on a Sunday evening, or it could even be a mid-week gathering.  It could involve a “Pot Luck” family night.  Topics for the evening might include teaching about Purim, (the next feast day in Jewish tradition), or Passover, or any of the Seven Major Feasts.  It could involve a message about the Biblical Roots of the Middle East Crisis,  or Biblical Repentance, or any number of other themes.  I would love to teach a little more on this month’s teaching theme – the Messianic Seal and Ephesians 2:15.  I could simply share some of my faith walk about How I came to the Messianic aspect of my Belief.  I can also arrange to bring with me some friends who could demonstrate or even instruct some messianic dance steps or they could teach some Messianic praise songs.  It would be both a fun time and an instructional time.

Simply have your pastor call me at his or her leisure to arrange something that would be suitable.  As a lead up to your approach, you might share this newsletter with your pastor or let them know about the BRT web site.

The big news in this area is the upcoming “International Heritage Tour” to Israel, set to happen from November 7th through 16th of this year.  The tour hostess,Abby McCutcheon (and the travel agent, Ari Bauer at IHTours) have been busy planning and making arrangements, and I am told that I should have a supply of tour brochures arriving in the next few days.  I really hope you will consider coming with me on this tour.  As we travel to the various sites, and reflect on our day around the dinner table, I look forward to talking with you about the Jewish roots of our Christian faith and why this is a relevant and important subject for Christians today.  If you have never been to Israel, you will be amazed at the feelings which are aroused just knowing you are touring the land where Yeshua and His Talmidim walked and talked.  If you have been before, this tour is still good for you, and I especially encourage you to request an itinerary as soon as possible and start making plans to join us!  We will visit many of the usual sites, of course – it’s understood.  How true it is each time I revisit a site I glean something new; something I did not see before.  And there will be other places we visit, other opportunities and optional activities that I believe make this tour very unique!  That’s because it is being put together by someone who has lived in Israel over an extended period!  (In fact, Abby just arrived back in Canada on January 12th.)  I encourage you to set your mind and heart right now – determine this is the year to be in H’Aretz [The Land] – This Year in Y’rushalayim.  Don’t let anything stand in the way of being a part of this very exciting tour.  To request a brochure, please email or phone me right away to get on the waiting list.  All my contact information is in the box at the bottom of this newsletter. Also, Please visit our website often: www.bethroaytovministries.com to be kept up-to-date on further details – whether about the tour (sites, costs, etc as soon as we get the brochure, or about the ministry in general.

FINALLY, THIS MONTH’S PRAYER REQUESTS:
Thank you for your ongoing prayer support.  This month, I would ask you to continue to uphold us in your daily prayers - first of all as noted above for time and clarity and the direction of the Holy Spirit in the writing of my book.  Also please pray for Joan’s work situation.  Your prayers are being answered as you can see above, but we still need to have a means for her to leave that work and perhaps get more involved in the ministry here.  This implies prayer cover for financial security to a greater extent than we have now.  Pray also, please, for the ongoing Bible Study and for new and numerous speaking engagements around the area.  This would be a tremendous help and encouragement to us both.  Finally, I would ask your prayers for a very dear friend of mine who is in hospital.  His name is Steve.  Ask that G-d would provide complete recovery and healing for him.

Well friends, that brings this edition to a close.  Thank you again for your help, input, comments, and your support – both in prayers and finances.  Joan and I are most grateful just to know that you are “there”.

Until next time,

"Y'varehch'cha Adonai v'yeesh m'recha –
May the Lord Bless you and Keep you."
